Keeping Soccer Skills Sharp Over the Summer

Just because it's summer doesn't mean players stop working on their soccer skills! Here are some suggestions for ways to continuously improve:
  • The World Cup runs from June 14 - July 15! Select a favorite player or two to follow and study how that player moves and plays throughout at least one entire match. This will help you develop a stronger notion of where to position themselves during various times of the game, how many touches to use under certain scenarios (pressured or not pressured), and ideas for foot-skills to incorporate in their everyday play in the future.

  • Try to get at least 50 touches on a soccer ball every day.

  • Sign up for an AYSO Summer Soccer Camp!

  • Work on shielding (protecting) the ball & then using your vision to pass it forwards, to the side or backwards. You can practice this with a friend or even your pet dog if they like to chase the ball. Try to keep it away from them while dribbling it within a small area.

  • Set up your own obstacle course! Develop speed and stamina dribbling through in a zig-zag fashion.

  • Play “Crossbar Challenge” with friends & use chipping techniques to hit the crossbar as many times as you can.

  • Practice shooting with your weaker foot. This will help you develop strength and accuracy in it. See how many times in a row you can kick a ball off a wall without missing.
